A Warm, Welcoming Place to Stay
oast house | guest bedrooms | tenterden
Having previously renovated the rest of this beautiful period house, the owners invited us back to finish the final rooms. They asked us to transform two lack-luster guest bedrooms into warm, inviting places to stay.
First Floor en-suite guest bedroom
This guest bedroom already had strong foundations, with a comfortable bed and the original oast-house ceiling beams, but the neutral scheme lacked interest and warmth. Our design gives the room more personality, and connects it to the colour palette that runs through the rest of the house. We re-upholstered the existing headboard in a bold diagonal stripe, and the coordinating bolster cushion neatly finishes the bed, without leaving guests to deal with multiple cushions..
The blue wall colour continues up and over the ceiling to create a seamless backdrop for the beams, and pale curtains allow the bed to be the focus of the room. The colour scheme from downstairs is echoed in a pink armchair and throw, and a ladder rack provides useful hanging storage for guest’s clothes.
A standard en-suite shower room was transformed with a delightful wallpaper mural. Wallpaper isn’t always suitable, especially in very steamy bathrooms, but in this occasional use room with good ventilation it makes a huge impact in a small space. We painted the sink unit in a coordinating green

ground floor en-suite bedroom
We rescued this guest room from its fate as a dumping ground, and transformed it into a restful space with a calming palette of green and blue. The original exposed beamed wall is the main feature in the room, and makes a beautiful backdrop for the bed.
Space was limited either side of the bed, so compact bedside tables are too small to comfortably accommodate lamps. To avoid unnecessary channeling through the period wall, we used wall-mounted plug-in lights.
We added thoughtful features in the room to make staying feel like a luxury for guests, including a space-saving dressing table facility, a practical luggage rack and a ladder for organising hanging clothes.
In the en-suite shower room, the wallpaper picks up the colour of the existing floor, and the pattern is echoed in the fabric of the bespoke bolster cushion on the bed. We painted the units to match, and ran the tiled back splash up to the ceiling before hanging the mirror over the tiles. This can help a small room feel more cohesive..
“We saw how Phoebe had transformed a friend's house and so we asked her to do the same with ours. She listens to what you want and takes account of your style. She has brought our oast house to life. It was a very sad, boring, soulless house before she came and now is full of colour and style and brings our family joy and warmth every day. Phoebe started with the living room, dining room, kitchen, hall and our bedroom. Then we asked her to do the kids' rooms and the guest rooms. We would really recommend Phoebe and have done so to many friends. She is very talented in her craft.”
