    A Splash of Art

When I was growing up my mother returned to college to study art and graphic design. I loved watching her drafting and drawing and creating beautiful things. Her friends were artists, with names like Ivan “The Wizard” and paint splattered dungarees. Her best friend was a picture dealer and visiting his house was always amazing, with pictures stacked 10 deep against walls because he just couldn’t stop buying them at auction.

    Creating a Masterpiece

When I was doing GCSE art I learnt a very valuable lesson. One that I still use to this day. We had been given a project to recreate a masterpiece, changing one thing about it. My very ambitious fourteen year old self chose Renoir’s A Girl With A Watering Can. Working quickly I carefully sketched it out and then painted it very flat. I was totally surprised when I was sent back and told to look at it again in more detail. In my mind I had done exactly as required.

Well here we are, 2014 and all people seem to be discussing is “Blue January”. What a sad way to start this brand new year! When I think “Blue” it doesn’t make me feel down in the dumps but delighted with the true beauty of the colour. Who doesn’t love a clear blue sky, the flutter of a dark rich blue silk dress or the inviting call of a Caribbean blue sea.

You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette.

I haven’t lost my mind and decided to deviate from an Interiors Blog to join everyone inspired by “The Great British Bake Off” to tell you about cooking. “You have to break a few eggs to make an omelette” has become my new over-used phrase of late. I found myself wondering what it was I was passionately discussing when those words came popping out of my mouth.

    Taste and Good Design

Oscar Wilde, a man who prided himself on his fine taste, had the character Lord Goring in “An Ideal Husband” utter these now famous words “Fashion is what one wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what other people wear.” Oscar Wilde was a great wordsmith but also an immense snob. We all have our own style and taste and it’s time for us all to stand up and be counted!
