February’s Indulgence: Love x Style x Life by Garance Doré
Why Did I buy this book?
This book is popping up everywhere. I first saw it on Instagram where it was beautifully featured in numerous photos on my feed! I next saw it displayed in a towering stack at Anthropologie and I’m now seeing it artfully arranged in styled Interiors shots here and there and, well, here. In other words, this book is everywhere and this book is now, baby!!! So I couldn’t help myself. I had to purchase a copy of my very own to find out what all the fuss was about.
So, what did I think of the book?
I feel I should start by saying that this isn’t an interiors book. In fact, there isn’t a single mention of décor at any point. Instead, it’s all about Garance Doré, world renowned illustrator, blogger and style icon. When buying the book, I knew that she would be covering style and I assumed that interiors would get a mention in the 272 pages, but it doesn’t.
Instead, the book does exactly what it says it will and it talks about her love, her style and her life with a humour that would delight just about anyone if given the chance to chat with her at a party. Doré is French but now lives in New York City and has certainly lived a life that is worth putting pen to paper to share it. Her self-effacing wit and charm make every topic she covers, from her family to elegance and growing up in the shadow of a sister who was known as “the pretty one”, completely engrossing.
Structurally, the book has a very bloggy feel about it, which may not be for everyone. Personally, I enjoyed the ability to hop between sections, letting myself read about what it’s like to live in NYC one night and the next reading about why it’s okay to break the rules. I loooooved sections of this book but found other sections to be like good magazine articles that are interesting but never really end up being read all the way through.
When it comes to aesthetics, Doré of course nails it and I can’t get over how beautiful the book is. The dusty pink cover with its metallic lettering is ever so on trend at the moment and it also feels nice to hold. Flip it open and you’ll find that the inside is stunningly put together with striking illustrations, photographs and a gorgeous layout. It very much feels like a book for 2016 and I know that it will be featured in the styling of many of my own photoshoots in the next few months.
Would I recommend this book?
I have friends who will adore this book and will refer to it as their new Girl Bible but I know others who really won’t get past the first chapter. I guess what I’m saying is it’s not for everyone but the ones who it is for will love it.
